Steep your Soul - dealing with DEPRESSION

Steep your Soul - dealing with DEPRESSION

Depression can feel like walking through a valley where the sun refuses to rise. For many people of faith, this season is especially confusing—Shouldn’t my faith make me feel better? Yet Scripture reminds us that God’s people have always known sorrow. David cried out in the Psalms. Elijah felt exhausted and overwhelmed. Even Jesus wept. Feeling low does not mean you are weak in faith; it means you are human and deeply loved.

One of the most comforting truths of Christianity is that God meets us where we are, not where we think we should be. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Notice it does not say God waits until we are strong again. He draws near in the breaking, in the confusion, and in the quiet tears no one else sees.

Depression often lies to us. It tells us we are alone, forgotten, or beyond hope. But God’s Word tells a different story. Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us that God’s mercies are “new every morning.” Even when we cannot feel hope, God is still at work, renewing grace moment by moment. Faith, in hard seasons, is sometimes as small as whispering, “Lord, help me today.” That prayer is enough.

It is also important to remember that seeking help is not a lack of faith. God often brings healing through community, counsellors, therapists, doctors, and trusted friends. Just as we would treat a broken bone, we can care for our minds and hearts with wisdom and humility. Galatians 6:2 encourages us to “carry each other’s burdens,” and that includes the burden of depression.

If you are struggling, allow yourself to rest in God’s presence without pressure to “fix” everything. Sit with a Psalm. Listen to worship music. Take one small step at a time. Healing is rarely instant, but God is patient and faithful in the process.

Above all, remember this: your life has meaning beyond this season. Depression is something you are experiencing, not who you are. You are a beloved child of God, held securely even in the darkest valley. The light may feel distant, but it has not gone out.

God is with you—and He is not finished with your story.
